The Castle of Champdor

Vue du sudVisitors in Champdor notice the castle right away because of its massive shape lightened by 4 angle towers and its tall square tower.

The castle of Champdor, finished in 1743, never had any alterations, which could destroy its beauty. Not so long ago, a family occupied it and today it is the property of the village board.

The tower, added in 1851 and the covered way on its last floor give originality to the architectural unity. The observatory offers an outstanding view of the surrounding landscape.

The front, still in excellent shape, was built with white Champdor limestone whose quality and beauty are known all around the world.

Photo de l'allée ouestA long path edged with centennial trees leads into a large park of 16,000 m2 surrounded by a tall stone wall.

The east side has a tall and elegant gate, which closes the property. The annexes, stables and the old communal oven can also found on this side.

A large farm with deep walls constitutes the annexes. The castle contains also a typical pigeon house and, at north, we can discover the Meridian, which tells the solar noon.
